The Skarpsalling Pot
Some of the most beautiful objects from Denmark's prehistory are made of ceramics. Especially in the Stone Age, beautiful ceramics were produced with elegant shapes and intricate patterns, which are also crucial for archaeologists when they need to date findings.

The development of ceramics can be traced through different styles, providing insight into how techniques and designs changed over time.

One of the most iconic discoveries is the Skarpsalling pot. It was found in 1891 on Ordrup Heath in Himmerland. This well-preserved clay pot is richly decorated, made around 3200 BC, and is a testament to the Stone Age's craftsmanship and aesthetic sense.

In the area around the Himmerland Heaths, you can visit the site where the Skarpsalling pot was found. A stone on a small hilltop marks the historic place and bears the inscription: "Here they found the Skarpsalling pot. The most beautiful Stone Age pot in the North."

Per Kirkeby's beautiful museum building houses 12,000 years of fascinating history and also invites you to learn more about the artist's many works in the town. At the museum, you are equipped for a tour around the town in Per Kirkeby's footsteps and at the same time experience the vibrant old railway town, which is now the main town of the municipality.

In the Cimbrian Hall, the fascinating story of the world-famous 2,000-year-old silver cauldron, the Gundestrup Cauldron, which was found in Rævemosen outside Aars, but originally comes from more southern skies, is told. The museum holds the stories, but Vesthimmerland's beautiful cultural landscape also invites you to great shared experiences. You can take the family on an exploration and discover six of Denmark's ancient monuments, including Myrhøj, Ertebølle, Borremose, Røvemose, Østerbølle, and Aggersborg. The impressive Viking fortress Aggersborg, along with four other Danish ring fortresses, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023.
